Trophy Ridge “Judge” Bow Sight

(2/27/11) The review for the Judge bow sight by Trophy Ridge was left by Arren D. Thanks for another great review Arren.

Outdoorsman Review:

Initial thoughts: Upon the arrival of my Trophy Ridge sight, I thought I was ripped off. The packaging for such an expensive piece of bow hunting equipment was very plain and average. The sight itself appeared to be extremely sturdy and well built. While I would have liked to adjust the sizes of my pins, you are stuck with the .019 that Trophy Ridge provided with the sight.

Installation: The installation of the sight was just like any other sight out there, two screws hold it to the bow. The one big difference is the holes that run along the insert that allows the sight to move closer or farther from the shooter. This could install with either a hand tighten screw or an allen head screw. I opted for the allen head, as I knew my bow was fast enough to use the farther position.

Appearance: The sight actually looks extremely sexy. The lining around the housing is glow in the dark, absorbing light all day to improve your shot during dusk. I actually tested this at dusk and it worked great, I was easily able to pick up the housing in my peep and with a flick of the wrist I turned on the light, allowing me to make a perfect 30 yard shot with minimal light outside.

Functionality: Trophy Ridge put this sight out there to allow for a quick and easy sighting in. After sighting in your 20 yard pin you move the gold hand screw on top to sight in your 30. After your 30 is sighted in, you are good out to 60. I tested this out by sighting in as quickly as I could. I went from installation to sighted in at 50 yards (I do not have room for 60 at my house) in 10 minutes. I stacked arrows at 20, 30, 40, and put three in the lungs at 50. This actually amazed me, as normally it takes me the better part of an afternoon to sight in to 40.

Overall thoughts: I have shot numerous sights and really like this one. I will use another for 3D but will use this for hunting purposes. The only thing I would have liked to have seen is the ability to change the pin sizes. At 50 yards the .019 pin is extremely large compared to my target, I can’t imagine what the 60 yard pin would look like on a small deer sized target. I am confident that I could take out a deer sized target at 50 yards if the conditions were perfect though.

I would give this sight 4 out of 5 stars. Price is a little high, most people do not trust Trophy Ridge for that amount. Also, having the ability to change the pin size would have been a great addition to this product.

Outdoorsman Review:

Even though I don’t have one of these sights I just wanted to leave a comment. I saw this sight at a 3D shoot. I have always used a horizontal pin sight. I saw a fellow shooter using a vertical sight. I couldn’t figure out how you would split pins with this sight so I asked the guy how you did this.

He let me hold his bow that had the Trophy Ridge Alpha V5 and as soon as I held it up to sight on a target I just “got it.”

The way to use this sight is to align the vertical risers with each other so they are (for lack of a better way to explain this) skinny. The less metal that you see the better. Then you put the pin on the target. If you need to split the pins then it’s actually pretty easy. You can still see the target.

Even though I don’t own one of these sights I think it might be worth the investment.

Since I don’t own the Alpha V5 I can’t say that this was reviewed by a Master Outdoorsman. We’re still looking for someone who owns this sight to review it. Have you used the Trophy Ridge Alpha V? If you have leave a review.

Outdoorsman review:

The first bow that I bought had a sight that looked like it was from the 70′s. I knew right away that I would have to upgrade to a new sight. Like many of my purchases I like to base my decision mainly on price. I’m always looking for a usable item at a great price.

I visited one of the Archery shops on the way home from work one day to get a sight. The first thing that I asked Wally (he’s the owner) was: “Which sight is good and cheap?” His first response was the TruGlo. I think it cost around $35 bucks. I said “great” and walked out the door with it. I didn’t even look at what the model was until just before writing this review. It is the Brite-Site Xtreme with five pins, a light, and a level.

Let me preface this by saying that I am still using this sight. I attached this sight to the PSE Nova that I was using. Over the 8 or so months that I have used this it has slowly fallen apart. I’m not sure if this is because of the vibration of the PSE (Which; by the way was terrible) or because the Brite-Site Xtreme is just a poor sight.

The first thing that fell off was the level. Then the light kept backing out. I eventually put loctite on the light to keep it from backing out. This worked OK until the cap over the batteries backed off and let the batteries fall out. To me this is not a good design when you have to loosen the battery cap to turn off the light and tighten it to turn it on.

Adjusting the pins requires an allen wrench. I’m a great proponent of the tooless adjustment design. After having adjusted the pins over the time I’ve had this sight it became harder to move the pins up and down without them trying to seat back in there previous location.

I am now using this sight on my Mathews Mission Maniac bow. After using it on this bow I noticed another problem. The Maniac is a much faster bow than the PSE that I was shooting. This meant that I had to move the sight out as far as possible so I could get a bigger gap between my pins. I moved it out as far as I could but it didn’t make much difference in the gap spacing. This may not be a problem for people that have slower bows.

What I like about the TruGlo Brite-Site Xtreme sight:

I like the fact that it was cheap. The pin brightness is also good both in the daylight and when using the light (before I lost the battery cap.)

What I don’t like so much:

The overall construction could be better. It is slowly falling apart. Others may not run into this problem if they have a smoother shooting bow.

Overall review:

For the price it’s a just OK sight. As I stated before, I’m still using it although I may be in the market for a new one.
