(2/4/11) The review for the r500xd rangefinder was left for us by Kent L. from somewhere in this great nation. Thanks Kent for your review.

Outdoorsman Review:

I know there are much better products out there but for the sweet price you can pick one of these up for it can’t be beat. Prices range from $140 on sale to $175. I
have been using this product for about a month now and have no complaints. After 300-500 ranges the battery is not showing the low indicator yet. It has 5 modes and  yards or meters can be selected with angle intelligence on or off. It also has a progressive scan mode.

I have ranged 250 yards with AI turned on and 500 with out. Very easy to use, I wear glasses and do not have to take them off because of the focusable eye piece and 5x magnification.

It is mostly drab green with realtree camo on part of it. It is comfortable in the hand and comes with a lanyard a case and a cleaning cloth. I bow hunt and it fits the bill very nice. Are there better ones out there? I am sure there are but for the same affordable price; no way. I am very happy with mine in every aspect. Battery life was a concern from other reviews but I have had no problems with mine at all.

Manufacturer’s Specs for the r500xd:

  • The r500xd has Angle Intelligence technology that automatically compensates for terrain variations, incline, and decline
  • Most accurate distance measurement possible
  • Scan Mode for multiple target ranging
  • Non-slip rubber exterior
  • Includes lens cloth, carry case, lanyard and CR 2 battery
  • RealTree Max-4 Camo

Outdoorsman Review:

(1/21/11) The review for the Simmons LRF-400 was provided by Robbie H. from Indiana. Thanks Robbie for the review and nice looking buck. I had a chance to use the LRF-400 myself when picking it out for our November giveaway. I was impressed by the accuracy and really liked the simplicity of it.

I had changed my sight on my bow to an adjustable one pin sight this year and I wanted to buy a range finder that was in my budget and with good quailty standards. I had went to the BassPro Shop to look at the Wildview range finder and saw the Simmions next to it.

Buck taken while using the LRF-400

Buck taken while using the LRF-400

After reading the some of the specs on both of them I decided to buy the Simmions. I was able to pick up the stop sign by my house out to 386yds.

This was my first time in the woods with a rang finder. I ranged every tree from 10yds out 50yds. I was lucky enough to harvest 6 deer with my bow this year. Thanks to the help of the Simmions LRF-400. One was a nice 10 pointer. I had just cleared out a shooting lane the the day before and ranged it at 32yds. The next morning at day break this 130 class buck comes walking right into my shooting lane and i made a well placed shot.

Now to the review. Nice price for the unit, plus it had a mail in re-bate. The use of a 9-volt battery made it simple. I like when it shows target aquired and shows the yards. The Simmons was comfortable across my body and stayed clear of the bow shot. This product has given me that confidence to take a longer shot with my bow than I normally would since now I have a reading of my targets yardage.

Manufacturer’s Specs for the LRF-400:

Outdoorsman Review:

I bought a HALO r400 last fall. It seems to be pretty accurate to a point but your not going to range a deer at 400 yds with it. Out to 100 maybe 150 yards it works great. I got it for archery so I figured it would work fine for my purposes. The only problem I had was the battery life. After much head scratching and $30.00 worth of batteries I believe I came up with the problem. If you attempt to range something that is too far away (or too close) and return the finder to its case without obtaining a yardage, the 20 second auto-off function will not work. It just continues to try to find a range and will kill the battery in a short time. If you have one try this. Hold the finder up to your ear. Push the range button with your hand over the front so it is impossible for it to get a reading. You’ll hear it start to hum. It will continue to hum(range)as long as you keep it from aquiring a range reading. As soon as you let it aquire a range the hum stops. I also removed the battery when storing it for long periods of time (several days or weeks)or it would kill the battery then also. I called WGI and the tech I spoke with acted as if he had never heard anything like I described… I don’t believe him for a second. There are many, MANY complaints about battery life on the r400 on several different internet sites. Hopefully WGI has corrected this on the 2010 models. But before you buy one give it the “blind finder” test I described above. If it keeps humming more than 20-30 seconds…it’s your call. Either deal with popping the battery in and out all the time, bring a pocket full of $10.00 batteries or look at another company.
To make a long story longer I gave the r400 away and bought a Nikon 550. A week ago I took out the Nikon and ranged a small doe at 324 yards on an open field across from my house. Problem solved.

Buy Buy the Bushnell Scout 1000 ARC Rangefinder

Outdoorsman Review:

Bushnell has always provided excellent products that have always been competively priced. The Bushnell Scout 1000 has been a pleasant surprise. After reviewing several different models I selected the Scout 1000 with ARC. It fit my working mans budget. It has been proven to be one of my favorite outdoor purchases. It is small, it’s comfortable in the hand, the buttons are easy to manipulate. I have utilized it for bowhunting deer and hogs in Texas and also Mule Deer and Elk in Colorado and New Mexico. I even use it to help with my job to determine distances for quick field estimates.

The Bow mode and the Rifle mode both work wonderfully. While in Rifle mode you can pre-set the Rangefinder to match the ballistics for the caliber rifle that you are shooting. The ARC (Angle Range Compensation) Mode has been extremely helpful while shooting out of elevated tree stands and has helped to “dial-in” the exact range to my targets. I especially like the Brush and Target Modes when dealing with different targets under different terrain conditions. The unit is much simpler to use than many of the competitors models.

The 5X power magnification is excellent not too strong not too weak. It also has a dioptic focus for fine tuning the unit for us older hunters. I have yet to have to replace batteries. It has a automatic shutoff mode which is wonderful. The only improvement I could see that it needs is in the low light situations. The internal features are black on the screen. It would be nice if they made a night option where the internal features could be switched to be illuminated in green. This would be particularly useful when hunting wild hogs at night in Texas.

Great buy for the money. If I lost this one, I would just go back in and purchase another one. It works.

Manufacturer’s Specs:

With bow or gun, no other rangefinder on the market today can put you on target with a comparable level of precision. Bushnell ARC (Angle Range Compensation) gives you the exact distance to your target, plus the “shoots-like” yardage in Bow mode and bullet-drop/holdover data in Rifle mode. All in a split second and in a single, super-compact unit. Nothing’s more advanced or easy to use. No matter how hard the competition might try.

Features

  • Built-in digital inclinometer measures angles from -60 to + 60° with +/- 1° accuracy
  • Pocket-size ergonomic design with textured rubber grip
  • 5x Magnification
  • Bow Mode – provides true horizontal distance from 5-99 yards
  • Rifle Mode – provides bullet-drop/holdover in inches
  • BullsEye, Brush and Scan Modes

OutdoorsMan Review:

I purchased the Leupold RX-600 originally just because I needed a range finder. I really had not looked around for range finders because I didn’t need one. Price was a big factor in finding a range finder. I knew that the less that I paid meant fewer features. I wanted to stay under $200 dollars. I really couldn’t find any new for that price. I remembered that a buddy had just purchased a combo binocular/range finder and that he had a range finder before this.

It turns out that it was the Leupold RX-600. This was one of the ones that kept popping up in the $200 range. I bought it from him for $150. After buying it from him I downloaded the users manual from Leupold’s website to look at the features. The first thing that I noticed was that the manual covered the RX-600 & the RX-750. The RX-750 had more features such as an inclinometer and true ballistic range. Since I had already bought the RX-600 I convinced myself that I didn’t need these features. I was only using this for archery 3D shoots and potentially hunting so simplicity was actually a plus for me.

After using the range finder for the first time I was impressed. I would range a target, shoot, and hit pretty close to where I was aiming. I tried the three different reticlals and decided on what Leopold calls the Duplex with Plus Point. This one seemed the easiest one to place on the target. There are only 2 buttons on the RX-600. One is the power button and one is the mode button. It was nice not to have to fumble with numerous buttons.

What I like about this range finder:

I liked the price first and foremost. I also liked the fact that it wasn’t too heavy. When you are walking a 3D archery course you can be carrying a lot of gear. I didn’t need extra weight loading me down. It also seemed to be robust. I hook the range finder on a retractable cord from my belt. As I walk it swings into other gear that I have. It still keeps working.

What I don’t like so much:

I am a big guy. 6’6″. This range finder seemed to be small to me. It may be just fine for smaller people. After using it for a while I noticed that the distance that it was reading was about a yard longer than what my buddies range finder was reading and about a yard more than some of the range markers on our home range. I’m not sure if my friend’s range finder was off along with the range markers or vice versa. It turns out that this isn’t much of a problem with the higher speed bow that I’m using. For lower speed bows this may be more of a problem.

Overall Review:

I like Leupold’s RX-600 range finder. It was inexpensive, simple to use, light, and fairly accurate. Based on the accuracy problem that I saw I might recommend a more accurate range finder for rifle shooters but for archery it seems to work just fine.
