Outdoorsman Review:

Initial thoughts/Design:
This broadhead can be found for around $25 online for a package of 3. The heads are 1.5″ cutting diameter and are three bladed with a large cutting head to open wound. The blades are held in place by a rubber band, so can be shot out of high speed bows. They open much like Grim Reaper style broadheads, the flesh will pull the blades back upon entrance. The broadhead is well built and the ferrule is painted black, which in theory should reduce drag both in the air and in meat.

Sharpness:
One word, DULL! In the package of 3 I received 2 broadheads that I would NEVER use on a deer because they are so dull. The last of the broadheads was not very sharp but noticeably sharper than the first two.

Accuracy:
The broadhead hit within 1 inch of field point zero every time I shot it. So they are VERY accurate.

Overall thoughts:
While this broadhead will not take the place of my Grim Reaper, Bloodrunner 2, or Rage 2; it will become my turkey broadhead of choice. The large blade on the front should easily penetrate a turkey which should stop any sort of deflection. I would give this broadhead a 3/5 because a dull blade does not belong on a broadhead. If Carbon Express can remedy this, the Torrid could become a GREAT whitetailbroadhead of choice. With sharp blades I could easily give this a 4.5/5 because the price is right for deer hunters. My only concern would be if you accidentally hit the shoulder, the front tip could bend back and not penetrate well.

Manufacturer’s Specs for the TORRID 100 Broadhead:

  • Field point accuracy and dependable blade retention system
  • Large cutting diameter with bone crushing lead blade for maximum penetration
  • Aircraft-grade aluminum ferrule
  • Weight: 100 grain
  • Cutting Diameter: 1 1/2 inch
  • Blade thickness: .031 inch

(2/27/11) And another fine review by Arren D. for the Carbon Express PileDriver arrows. Thanks again Arren.

Outdoorsman Review:

Initial thoughts: The CX Piledriver Hunter 350 weighs in at 350 grains per inch (gpi) and has CX’s proprietary Weight-Forward Technology. The Piledrivers arrived and looked fantastic with their camo coating with neon green labels. Bending proved that the Piledriver will immediately go back into its original state.

Bow Specs:
2009 PSE Omen
70# and 29″ draw
VaporTrail Limbdriver rest

Shooting: Upon drawing the Piledriver back, I was greeting with its noise sliding on my Limbdriver rest. I drew it back a few times and each time it sounded like metal sliding on metal. My LimbDriver has rubber pads so there is no real reason for the noise. The noise is not loud enough to annoy but it is audible, no other arrow I have shot has made this noise. The arrow nocked nicely and flew true with my Easton Full Metal Jackets. Unlike the draw, the arrows appeared to fly quietly until impact with my BLOB target.

Durability: I decided to test the Bulldog collar on the back of the arrow to see if it truly would hold up to an impact. I stacked arrow after arrow next to each other until I finally hit the nock. The nock was broken in half and there was a small dent on the collar but the arrow was intact. I would take that as a success. This matched with its heavy weight and the fact that it is carbon, should give the shooter confidence in knowing the arrow will hold up to quite a bit of torture in the field.

Overall: I do like the Piledriver Hunters and am considering replacing my tried and true FMJs but the draw worries me. I might have to place mole skin on my rest to take this sound away. Overall, I give this product 4.5 stars. The only deduction I give it was on the noise, some will think the price is steep, but I am firm believer in “You get what you pay for”.

Manufacturer Specs for the PileDriver Arrow:

  • Ultimate Penetration – High grain per inch ratio creates increased penetration and exceptional stopping power
  • Clear coat finish-Provides greater durability and stealth performance on an arrow rest
  • Predator Vanes – High performance compact design for added arrow velocity and greater accuracy
  • Bulldog™ Nock Collar – unrelenting strength and durability for nock end impacts

Carbon Express F-15™ Dual Blade Expandable Broadhead

(2/24/11) The review for Carbon Express’s F-15 expandable broadhead was left for us by Nick M. Thank you Nick for the review.

Outdoorsman Review:

The F-15 broadhead is new from Carbon Express. It’s a forward expanding broadhead, small in size, and flimsy looking blades.

I shot my first doe of the year using the F-15. In my opinion, this wouldn’t be a broadhead I would recommend to anyone. The entry hole was real small. The exit was OK at best. The shot I placed on the deer was a one lung and liver. I had to track this deer 200 yards with little blood about 150 of those yards. The blood trail was just not there and it should have been. I now only use these broadheads for small game hunting.

Manufacturer’s Specs for the F15 Broadhead:

  • Patented dual blade design creates 250% greater wound opening for faster death and better blood trail
  • 440 stainless steel patented PIM manufacturing process for optimal precision and greater accuracy
  • One-piece ferrule construction with .030″ thick blades allow for enhanced durability
