Flambeau Deluxe Soft Side Compound Bow Case

(3/20/11) The review for Flambeau’s Deluxe Soft Side bow case was left for us by Thomas F. from Clifton Park, NY. Thanks Thomas for the review.

Outdoorsman Review:

The Flambeau Deluxe Compound Bow Case 6460BU is an adequate middle of the line soft bow case. I was immediately impressed with the room inside the case and amount of padding. Its styling is sharp and clean while still utilizing a quality material that is both rugged and durable. The case holds up to twelve arrows. However one of the disadvantages of this case is the rubber arrow holders. To place the arrows into the alotted spots at first is frustrating and time consuming. Yet with practice and use it does get easier. Still not the best system I’ve seen.

In the arrow compartment is two zippered pockets. These pockets provide ample room to hold the majority of the archery supplies you will need for the range or hunt. The second larger compartment is for bow storage only. It provides adequate room for almost any size compound bow. However the biggest drawback with this case is the inability to change the strap position to match your bows contour. I found i had to stretch the velcro and fabric through one of the holes in my bow to make it fasten. It is do able with almost any bow, however the fact of having to do it every time is a major disadvantage.

Overall the case is durable, functional, great for the range or short hunts, and at a price between 70 and 90 dollars it is also very affordable. On the other side if you are looking for more versatility and ease of use you may have to look toward the more expensive models.

Manufacturer’s Specs for the Soft Side Deluxe:

  • Fully padded and lined
  • Main Compartment for bow storage
  • Secondary compartment holds up to 12 arrows and includes zippered mesh pockets for organization of other accessories

Outdoorsman Review:

Kevin with his Buck taken using the Buck Bomb

I never was one to have much faith in using deer scents while hunting. That was until I tried The Buck Bomb Bone Collector spray in 2010. Not only did it allow me to shoot the biggest whitetail buck of my life (136″ 10 pt), but it brought the deer right to the spot I sprayed it on the ground. I had sprayed it in the air as well, about 5 minutes before the deer came from downwind of me. Needless to say I will be using this spray every fall during the deer season.

Manufacturer’s Specs for The Buck Bomb™:

The Bone Collector Doe In Estrus Bomb is 5-ounces of 100% Doe In Estrus urine with the preservative Scent Protect™ added during the collection process. The Bone Collector Bomb is perfect for use during the pre-rut and rut to stimulate aggressive breeding behavior in mature bucks.

What is Scent Protect?

Scent Protect is the result of five years of molecular biology research targeting the fundamental mechanisms that are responsible for the degradation or proteins in human and animal urine. Scent Protect is the most advanced technology currently available for the protection of the active components that make up the scent package.

How Scent Protect Works.

Scent is a combination of several proteins interacting with excreted chemicals in urine. There are also many enzymes in urine which have the net effect of degrading the proteins that comprise the scent package. Scent Protect deactivates 31 different enzyme systems protecting the proteins and allowing the scent to remain potent and viable for extended periods of time.

Additionally the scent package is affected by a change in Ph of the animal urine due to break down products in the urine and either primary or secondary contamination of the urine by bacteria. Scent Protect TM stops bacteria growth and as the bacteria die the active chemistry inactivates the enzymes contained in the bacteria and stabilizes the Ph factor in protecting the scent package.

Finally, there are proteins in the scent package that are heat sensitive and will cease to be active if subjected to high temperatures. Scent Protect™ imparts a high degree of thermal stability to the scent package. This means that urine protected with Scent Protect TM can withstand high temperatures greater than 100 degrees F for extended periods of time. The combination of quality urine, Scent Protect and Buck Bomb cans makes this new line of product the freshest doe estrus urine on the market today!

Leupold RX-1000i Rangefinder with TBR & DNA Technology

(3/16/11) The review for the Leupold RX-1000i rangefinder was left for us by Wes H. from Iowa Park, Texas. Thanks Wes for the review.

Outdoorsman Review:

I purchased this rangefinder mostly for bowhunting, but after using it a few times, I wouldn’t go in the field without it. I tried several different brands of rangefinders at a major outdoors store and found this one to be the best choice for the performance/cost. There may be more expensive ones out there, but this one had the best clarity, ease of use, and easiest to read display for me. The red LED’s are adjustable to match the users needs and stand out well in the woods.

I found that the TBR feature works great, ecspecially on the bow settings. It gives the user true distance and adjusted shooting distance depending on the shooting angle. I had used this while practicing 30-50 yard shots from a 14′ stand at an archery range. The RX1000i gave the true and adjusted distance, I put the correct pin for the adjusted distance on target, and WHAM a perfect shot was made.

This rangefinder will always be in the woods with me regardless of bow or gun hunting. I can’t wait to try some long distance shots on the rifle range and try the ballistics TBR.

Manufacturer’s Specs for the RX-1000i Rangefinder:

  • True Ballistic Ranging® (TBR) technology accounts for incline, range to target, and your ballistics information.
  • Our next generation rangefinder engine with DNA (Digitally eNhanced Accuracy) delivers increased accuracy, speed and range.
  • High-performance optics deliver a 3x brighter picture image for accurate ranging in low-light conditions.

  • Advanced OLED technology is user adjustable to match display intensity for changing light conditions.
  • Choose from three different reticles: Plus Point™, Duplex, and Duplex with Plus Point.
  • Powered by the readily available CR2 lithium camera battery, the RX-1000i with DNA features a convenient battery power indicator.
  • Truly Compact – At 3.8 inches long, 2.8 inches tall, and 7.8 ounces, the RX-1000i with DNA is a powerful tool that fits in your pocket.

  • Accurate ranging up to 1,000 yards on reflective targets, with measurement readouts in yards or meters.

Are you shooting Hoyt’s 2011 Rampage XT bow? Do you like it as much as Sam? Let us know what you think by leaving a comment below.

(3/16/11) The review for the Hoyt Rampage XT bow was provided by Sam B. from Kirkland, Washington. Thanks Sam for the great review.

Outdoorsman Review:

After many attempts at trying to have an older bow that I inherited re-strung, I finally decided to upgrade to a new 2011 Hoyt Rampage XT. Quite honestly the Rampage was chosen for cost, as it comes in slightly under the CRX. Primary notable differences in the two bows are the cast riser on the Rampage, and the machined riser on the CRX. Where some archers might notice this difference immediately, I had little I could find so opted for the Rampage. I was not disappointed.

Quite possibly the most advanced bows on the market today, Hoyt has outdone themselves once again with their newest lineup. I have heard many hunters say they prefer the longer axis to axis of other bows, but I like the shorter for still hunting and at 32″ this fit my tastes well.

This bow is screaming fast at a 7″ brace hitting game at a whopping 295 fps when set only at 55#. I can’t imagine why anyone would look any further for another bow. Small game and birds are all I have matched this monster up to as big game season has not yet arrived, but I do know a few bulls that will be wanting to lookout over their shoulder this coming fall.

At just 4 pounds, this bow allowed for all my standard accessories and had no balance issues at all. This is not heavy in the hand and produced awesome groups at up to fifty yards. The weight ratio and the inclusion of the Perfect balance offset for stabilizers makes holding long on targets effortless.

The XT comes equipped with the high performance XTS PRO ARC Limb System and Hoyt’s fast, efficient Fuel Cam. The Rampage features their new ZRS 12 Split Limb System with a M4 Cam delivering smooth and efficient shots at any distance. This bow is quiet and can offer any hunter the value of high technology in an affordable pricetag.

Without question, Hoyt is my bow of choice and the Rampage XT will offer me countless hours of great hunting experience.

Manufacturer’s Specs for the Rampage XT:

  • Limb: XTS Pro ARC®
  • Axle to axle: 32 inches
  • Brace height: 7 inches
  • Draw weight: 40 – 80 pounds
  • Mass weight: 4 pounds
  • Eccentric: Fuel Cam
  • Draw length: 24.5 – 30 inches
  • Speed: 323 feet per second

Slick Trick 1″ 100 Grain Broadheads – 3 Pack

(3/14/11) The review for Slick Trick’s broadheads was left for us by Jeff B. from Burnsville, MN. Thanks Jeff for your review.

Outdoorsman Review:

I’ve been shooting a wide variety of broadheads, mostly expandables, and have successfully harvested many animals with them. The problems I had with mechanical heads where beginning to outweigh the performance benefits. The constant messing with rubber bands, premature deployment, and general “mechanical” failures.

Last year I decided to switch to a fixed blade broadhead, and as anyone who is looking into purchasing a broadhead knows the available variety is mind boggling…which one is right for me? After alot of research, I had decided to try the Slick Trick broadhead. I went with the standard 1″ version in 100 grain.

Slick Trick offers a variety of broadheads in different weights and cutting diameters to best “fit” the animal you are targeting. Slick Tricks come in packs of 3, and are priced comparable to other broadheads on the market. Out of the package, they are easy to assemble, and come with extremely sharp Lutz blades. The flight of these heads are very similar to field points, and require very little (if any) tuning to hit the same as field points.

Overall I have been extremely satisfied with every aspect of the Slick Trick broadheads, and would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a durable, great flying fixed blade broadhead.

Manufacturer’s Specs for the Slick Trick Broadhead:

  • DEADLY ACCURATE Fieldpoint Flight
  • FOUR BLADE “Slug Holes” and Bloodtrail
  • WICKED SHARP Lutz Solingen Germany MERCEDES Blades
  • ULTRA STRONG 1 Piece SUPERSTEEL Ferrule with Patented Bladelock
  • SUPERIOR PASS THROUGH Penetration
  • BONE SHATTERING 4 Edge Tip
  • MASSIVE HEMORRAGE, quick kills

(3/2/11) The review for the SwampGhost boots was left by Nick M. from Port Washington, WI. Thanks Nick.

Outdoorsman Review:

Where I hunt you need a tall rubber boot and I kept buying $60 boots that I thought would last but I was wrong, so I decided to pay the money for a nice pair. I bought these boots at the beginning of last season and wore them until the end.

Irish Setter Swampghost boots are a neoprene topped boot with 1000 grams of insulation and a good tread pattern with the mud claw rocker sole on the bottom. The 1000 grams of Thinsulate™ along with a couple pairs of socks will keep your feet warm though the winter months. In the early season a liner sock will keep your feet sweet free. 17″ tall boot keep your feet dry and scent free.

The ExoFlex technology makes for the best fitting and most comfortable rubber boot I have ever worn. I highly recommend this product to anyone that needs all season rubber boot.

Manufacturer’s Specs for the SwampGhost boot:

  • Height: 17 inch
  • Insulation: Non-Insulated
  • Construction: Cement
  • Sizes: E 7,8-12,13,14,15

YakTrax PRO Traction Cleats

(3/2/11) The review for YakTrax’s PRO traction cleats was left for us by Rion M. from Portland, Oregon. I’m sure being from Oregon you have plenty of chances to use these cleats. Thanks Rion for the review.

Outdoorsman Review:

I’ve owned both the Pro and regular Yaktrax, and I have to say that the Pro are the superior version. I’ve used this version two straight winters in Oregon, on my snow boots as well as regular tennis shoes in walking to work every day. The Velcro strap on the Pros keep the grips in place, and I’ve never had any problems. My coworkers also like these far better than the Stabilicers… I had someone try mine out, and she bought a pair for herself that very day.

I think the only pair I destroyed came from ordering a size too small… though they stretch, there is a finite life, and I actually snapped the support between the heel and ball sections by yanking too hard on one of my pairs. My only warning to you. Other than that, they’re GREAT!

Manufacturer’s Specs for the YakTrax PRO:

Yaktrax have a unique, spikeless, patented coil design, unlike other products on the market.

The Yaktrax Pro will instantly give you better traction, confidence and safety on packed snow or ice. Move about naturally with the same solid grip that you are accustomerd to on dry surfaces. Walk or run as you normally would and experience stability on ice and snow like you have never felt before.

Made with high strength, abrasion resistant 1.4mm steel coils and heavy duty natural rubber material, the Yaktrax Pro easily conforms to the shape of your boot or shoe. With its patented SkidLock coil design, the Yaktrax Pro provides 360 degrees of traction on packed snow and ice and can be worn in temperatures as low as -41° Fahrenheit.

  • Easy On/Off
  • Walk Naturally
  • Spikeless/Ultralight
  • Helps reduce the Risk of Falls & Injuries

AAE Max Hunter Vanes

AAEs Max Hunter vanes were reviewed by a master Outdoorsman

Are you using Arizona Archery’s Max Hunter vanes on your arrows? If you are then how are they working for you? Do you like them as much as Al? Tell us by leaving a comment below.

(3/2/11) AAE’s Max Hunter vanes were reviewed by Al Q. from Southern California. Thanks al for the very detailed review of Arizona’s vanes.

Outdoorsman Review:

For the past three months I have been shooting Arizona Archery Enterprises Max Hunter Vanes and I have nothing but good things to say about them. Originally, I was shooting Blazer vanes and while they work great, the Max Hunters work better. For me they worked MUCH better.

In comparison, the Max Hunter is a different design than the Blazer. Ifirst laid eyes on the Max Hunters while watching a hunting show and Icouldn’t help think about how odd I thought they looked. Like they say, I really should never judge a book by its cover. Ever.

First off, you can get the Max Hunters in only one size. The specificsare 2.1″ long, .590″ high, .024 thick and they come in eight colors: Black, Bright Green, Fire Orange, Hot Pink, Purple, Sunset Gold,White, and Yellow.

The vanes themselves are a bit thicker than most, but I feel that this helps correct the arrow in flight much faster. When shooting these in a crosswind the AAE vaned arrows corrected faster than the Blazer vaned arrows and I was more accurate with the AAE vanes. There are other benefits with the vane being thicker than most. I shot more than one arrow through another vane, on more than one occasion. I then took the arrow with an arrow hole through two vanes and shot it at 60yards. I hit pay dirt. Again. Even with holes in the fletching the arrow flew true. (It did have a nice airy, whistling sound, but this was just for the field review). When I did this with the Blazers, my arrows flew erratically and were not consistent.

When fletching, they go on each properly prepared arrow securely and with the AAE glue, they hold extremely well. I never had any fletching tear off when shooting it through mesh. On the other hand, more than once, the Blazers (with their glue) did come off when shot through the mesh.

I hit the range multiple times in the past three months. The AAE MaxHunters corrected faster and my arrow groupings were tighter that the Blazer vaned arrows. Same arrows, same field points, just different fletching. I was more consistent with the Max Hunters and even some of the spectators at the range noticed.

The Max Hunters fly true and are, in my opinion, the best vanes on the market. Let’s put it this way, for the first time ever, Sunday I decided to go out and shoot at 70 yards. So, I adjusted my pin to what I thought was close and shot 5 arrows. I hit the target , but wasn’t as close as I wanted. One adjustment later and I had all five arrows in the paper plate. At 70 yards! For many western hunters that’s not abig deal, but for this guy who has never shot anything over 60 yards, well, this was awesome. It felt great and I will continue to shoot the Max Hunter vanes on any arrow I shoot because I believe in them.

All in all, I give these vanes a 9/10. They are excellent. The only reason I didn’t give them a 10/10 is because they do stick a bit inside some of the fletching jigs because of their thickness. Other than that, they are superb and I’ll back them 100%.

Manufacturer’s Specs for the Max Hunter vane:

Not too many technical specs for the Max Hunter vanes but here they are:

  • One size: 2.1″ long, .590″ high, .024 thick.
  • Eight Colors: Black, Bright Green, Fire Orange, Hot Pink, Purple, Sunset Gold, White, and Yellow.

Carbon Express PileDriver™ Arrows

(2/27/11) And another fine review by Arren D. for the Carbon Express PileDriver arrows. Thanks again Arren.

Outdoorsman Review:

Initial thoughts: The CX Piledriver Hunter 350 weighs in at 350 grains per inch (gpi) and has CX’s proprietary Weight-Forward Technology. The Piledrivers arrived and looked fantastic with their camo coating with neon green labels. Bending proved that the Piledriver will immediately go back into its original state.

Bow Specs:
2009 PSE Omen
70# and 29″ draw
VaporTrail Limbdriver rest

Shooting: Upon drawing the Piledriver back, I was greeting with its noise sliding on my Limbdriver rest. I drew it back a few times and each time it sounded like metal sliding on metal. My LimbDriver has rubber pads so there is no real reason for the noise. The noise is not loud enough to annoy but it is audible, no other arrow I have shot has made this noise. The arrow nocked nicely and flew true with my Easton Full Metal Jackets. Unlike the draw, the arrows appeared to fly quietly until impact with my BLOB target.

Durability: I decided to test the Bulldog collar on the back of the arrow to see if it truly would hold up to an impact. I stacked arrow after arrow next to each other until I finally hit the nock. The nock was broken in half and there was a small dent on the collar but the arrow was intact. I would take that as a success. This matched with its heavy weight and the fact that it is carbon, should give the shooter confidence in knowing the arrow will hold up to quite a bit of torture in the field.

Overall: I do like the Piledriver Hunters and am considering replacing my tried and true FMJs but the draw worries me. I might have to place mole skin on my rest to take this sound away. Overall, I give this product 4.5 stars. The only deduction I give it was on the noise, some will think the price is steep, but I am firm believer in “You get what you pay for”.

Manufacturer Specs for the PileDriver Arrow:

  • Ultimate Penetration – High grain per inch ratio creates increased penetration and exceptional stopping power
  • Clear coat finish-Provides greater durability and stealth performance on an arrow rest
  • Predator Vanes – High performance compact design for added arrow velocity and greater accuracy
  • Bulldog™ Nock Collar – unrelenting strength and durability for nock end impacts
  • Straightness: ± .005″ max.
  • Weight Tolerance: ± 1.0 grain

What do you think of Trophy Ridge’s Judge? Easy to sight in? Can you really do it in 10 minutes or less? Tell us what you think by leaving a comment below.

Trophy Ridge “Judge” Bow Sight

(2/27/11) The review for the Judge bow sight by Trophy Ridge was left by Arren D. Thanks for another great review Arren.

Outdoorsman Review:

Initial thoughts: Upon the arrival of my Trophy Ridge sight, I thought I was ripped off. The packaging for such an expensive piece of bow hunting equipment was very plain and average. The sight itself appeared to be extremely sturdy and well built. While I would have liked to adjust the sizes of my pins, you are stuck with the .019 that Trophy Ridge provided with the sight.

Installation: The installation of the sight was just like any other sight out there, two screws hold it to the bow. The one big difference is the holes that run along the insert that allows the sight to move closer or farther from the shooter. This could install with either a hand tighten screw or an allen head screw. I opted for the allen head, as I knew my bow was fast enough to use the farther position.

Appearance: The sight actually looks extremely sexy. The lining around the housing is glow in the dark, absorbing light all day to improve your shot during dusk. I actually tested this at dusk and it worked great, I was easily able to pick up the housing in my peep and with a flick of the wrist I turned on the light, allowing me to make a perfect 30 yard shot with minimal light outside.

Functionality: Trophy Ridge put this sight out there to allow for a quick and easy sighting in. After sighting in your 20 yard pin you move the gold hand screw on top to sight in your 30. After your 30 is sighted in, you are good out to 60. I tested this out by sighting in as quickly as I could. I went from installation to sighted in at 50 yards (I do not have room for 60 at my house) in 10 minutes. I stacked arrows at 20, 30, 40, and put three in the lungs at 50. This actually amazed me, as normally it takes me the better part of an afternoon to sight in to 40.

Overall thoughts: I have shot numerous sights and really like this one. I will use another for 3D but will use this for hunting purposes. The only thing I would have liked to have seen is the ability to change the pin sizes. At 50 yards the .019 pin is extremely large compared to my target, I can’t imagine what the 60 yard pin would look like on a small deer sized target. I am confident that I could take out a deer sized target at 50 yards if the conditions were perfect though.

I would give this sight 4 out of 5 stars. Price is a little high, most people do not trust Trophy Ridge for that amount. Also, having the ability to change the pin size would have been a great addition to this product.

Manufacturer’s Specs for the Judge:
