Scott Archery Shark Dual-Caliper Release

Outdoorsman Review:

(1/21/11) The review for Scott’s Shark release was provided by Patrick R. from Kansas. Thanks Patrick for another great review.

I was in the market for a release, as I am just getting back into archery after 20+ years. Back then, I used finger tabs, as releases were way too expensive for this 14 year old budding archer to afford.

I stopped by the closest pro shop to try some releases and hopefully get an idea of what I wanted. I tried releases from three or four different manufacturers to get a broad feel for what is out there. Being on a budget, I didn’t bother looking at the $100+ releases that were available. What I discovered, though, is that there is a huge difference between a $60 release and a $25 release.

After trying several releases I settled on the Shark double caliper release from Scott Archery. The buckle strap is soft yet firm enough to hold its shape very well, with several holes for a wide range of adjustment. The 4-hole length adjustment is easy to change by removing a set screw, extending or retracting the shaft, and replacing the screw.

The trigger is adjustable for weight; however, the tension is very nice from the factory, and I haven”t felt the need to play with it yet. The forward trigger design is a blessing for a short draw fellow like me. My anchor point is comfortably behind my jaw, while the long head on some of the other brands moved my anchor point onto my neck (I refuse to shorten my already short draw length). Release is crisp with no travel. Even as I tried other Scott releases in single caliper and hook style, I kept coming back to the Shark. I couldn’t justify the extra $15 for the hook-style Silverhorn that I tried, at least not for my first release.

What I like:
Just about everything, actually. The jaws open wide enough to facilitate easy loading onto the D-loop, they snap open and close with precision, and the crisp trigger response means it releases when you want it to instead of at some point after you begin to press it.

What I don’t like:
It doesn’t come in my choice of camo. It’s either black or Mossy Oak. Really, that’s the only thing I don’t like about it.

I may graduate at some point in the future to a hook-style release that will be even easier to load onto the string loop, but for a mid-priced release to start with, this is an incredible release for the money. I paid a bit more for it at the pro shop as opposed to buying it online, but I want to support my pro shop so they stick around. Even at a slightly higher price, the Shark is a great value.

Manufacturer’s Specs:

  • Compact, double-caliper archery release
  • Roller sear for the smoothest-possible trigger pull
  • New streamlined design
  • Available with 4-hole length adjustment or NCS connection system
  • Forward, knurled trigger to maximize draw length
  • Compact, dual-jaw
  • Ideal for high-performance, short axle-to-axle bows

Outdoorsman Review:

Initial thoughts: I had never shot anything other than a strapped trigger release so this thumb release is a little different. The Xtreme fits the hand nicely and makes no noise when the trigger is activated. Colors you can purchase this in are black and camouflaged, I opted for the black.

Noise: As I stated earlier the there is not any noise on release. I shot hundreds of arrows and the release never made a sound.

Fit and Feel: Moving from a strap to a hand release such as this is a major change to shooting. The strap assists with the pull of the bow, so you must get used to your hands holding this weight. The one small problem I found was my middle finger gets worn on the knuckle from a small area on the release. I now have a callus from shooting this release. The fit is nice, I have larger hands and have no issues with holding this release.

Accuracy: I noticed my groups got tighter immediately. This release really stops you from punching the trigger as your thumb does not have the sensitivity of your index finger. I had to stop shooting groups due to fletching and FOB losses.

Overall: I would give this release 4.5/5 stars. Again, the only reasons to drop this from a 5 are the price which is relatively expensive for a release, and the area that wore a callus into my middle finger.

I would wholeheartedly recommend this release to anyone looking for a new way of shooting.

Outdoorsman Review:

I picked this release up from a local archery shop. I never thought that I would like a release. The last time I had tried a release was about 25 years ago when I was a teenager. Releases back then didn’t have straps. They were the simple “T” handle types and no one seemed to have the manufacturing capabilities to make a reliable release.

TRU Ball definitely seems to have solved this problem. It’s small, light weight, and very easy to put around your wrist. It has a velcro™ strap and buckle. Once it’s on it stays on. The one thing that I did notice is that the wrist strap doesn’t tighten completely around my wrist. I think that this might be by design.

Adjustment of the release distance from the fixed wrist band and the release is done by moving the knot in the rope. Fine adjustment is then done by turning the threaded, knurled tube that the rope goes through. A lock nut then keeps the knurled tube from moving. I found untying the knot to be a PITA but I only had to do this once. If I want to make adjustments now I just use the fine adjustment fitting.

Using the release is great. It has a self closing mechanism so you don’t manually have to close the release. The trigger is just right for me. Not too touchy and not too hard to activate. I’m not sure if there is a way to adjust the trigger sensitivity. If there is I don’t see an adjustment screw or a way to remove and replace a spring.

For the money the Rackmaster Pro is a nice reliable release. I’ve had friends buy more expensive releases that have malfunctioned right in the middle of league shoots. I would recommend the Rackmaster Pro to others as a good inexpensive release.

What I like about the TRU Ball Rackmaster Pro:

The best feature about this release is the self closing mechanism. It is easy to put on the D loop and it stays put until I’m ready to shoot.

What I don’t like so much:

There isn’t much that I don’t like about this release. I’ve been using it now for over 6 months and the only complaint would be the initial adjustment of the knot in the rope. I believe there are other models of the TRU Ball that have a strap adjustment versus the rope. This may be a better choice for people that need to adjust it periodically (perhaps for different shooters.)
