(3/16/11) The review for the Hoyt Rampage XT bow was provided by Sam B. from Kirkland, Washington. Thanks Sam for the great review.

Outdoorsman Review:

After many attempts at trying to have an older bow that I inherited re-strung, I finally decided to upgrade to a new 2011 Hoyt Rampage XT. Quite honestly the Rampage was chosen for cost, as it comes in slightly under the CRX. Primary notable differences in the two bows are the cast riser on the Rampage, and the machined riser on the CRX. Where some archers might notice this difference immediately, I had little I could find so opted for the Rampage. I was not disappointed.

Quite possibly the most advanced bows on the market today, Hoyt has outdone themselves once again with their newest lineup. I have heard many hunters say they prefer the longer axis to axis of other bows, but I like the shorter for still hunting and at 32″ this fit my tastes well.

This bow is screaming fast at a 7″ brace hitting game at a whopping 295 fps when set only at 55#. I can’t imagine why anyone would look any further for another bow. Small game and birds are all I have matched this monster up to as big game season has not yet arrived, but I do know a few bulls that will be wanting to lookout over their shoulder this coming fall.

At just 4 pounds, this bow allowed for all my standard accessories and had no balance issues at all. This is not heavy in the hand and produced awesome groups at up to fifty yards. The weight ratio and the inclusion of the Perfect balance offset for stabilizers makes holding long on targets effortless.

The XT comes equipped with the high performance XTS PRO ARC Limb System and Hoyt’s fast, efficient Fuel Cam. The Rampage features their new ZRS 12 Split Limb System with a M4 Cam delivering smooth and efficient shots at any distance. This bow is quiet and can offer any hunter the value of high technology in an affordable pricetag.

Without question, Hoyt is my bow of choice and the Rampage XT will offer me countless hours of great hunting experience.

Manufacturer’s Specs for the Rampage XT:

  • Limb: XTS Pro ARC®
  • Axle to axle: 32 inches
  • Brace height: 7 inches
  • Draw weight: 40 – 80 pounds
  • Mass weight: 4 pounds
  • Eccentric: Fuel Cam
  • Draw length: 24.5 – 30 inches
  • Speed: 323 feet per second

Have you shot the SWAT? Rhyme’s don’t it. If you have shot BowTech’s SWAT then let other archers know what you think of it by leaving a comment below.

(2/9/11) The review for the BowTech SWAT was left for us by Hunter C. Thanks Hunter for the review. By the way. Fitting name.

Outdoorsman Review:

The Bowtech SWAT is like something I have never shot or seen before. With the new style of this super parallel bow it makes each and every shot very nice. The bow comes with a factory hush kit I recommend replacing with sims silencers as well as the limb savers. The string stop is built very well and really dampens the sound down. The strings are also very great for factory strings. I have run nearly 3000 arrows through it and it looks new to this day. The bow also has a invelvet finish on it that makes it feel soft to the touch and warming on those 20 degree mornings in the stand. Something else on this that is like no other is the rotating module. You can basically get any draw from 26″ to 31″ with no press or parts to change, just spin the module and your good to go.

Now onto how it shoots, its pretty simple. Its great, the bow has a great grip that holds nice and is also light. Also the bow has no jump to it at all. The bow is completly “dead in the hand”. The first shot you literally dont know it fired. One downfall is speed though, its not the fastest bow out today but I sacrifice that to gain the amazing shootability of the bow. Overall its a great choice for newbies as well as pro archery shooters.

Manufacturer’s Specs for the SWAT:

  • Brace height: 7 1/8 inches
  • IBO Speed: 314 – 322 feet per second
  • Axle to axle: 34 1/32 inches
  • Kinetic energy: 80.6 foot-pounds
  • Draw length: 26 – 31 inches
  • Adjustable let-off: 65% – 80%
  • Draw weight: 50, 60, 70 pounds

Rotating Mod System

Unlike most bows on the market today, BowTech bows do not require a new cam or module to set your draw length. Simply remove the module screws, rotate the module, and re-tighten. At least six inches of draw length adjustment and an infinite draw stop feature is available on most BowTech bows, allowing for custom draw length tuning for yourself or others.

BowTech Factory Strings

BowTech is widely regarded for the best factory strings “out of the box”. The secret is literally in the hands. BowTech strings are handmade in the USA to machine-grade tolerances. The string has exactly the same amount of twist across its entire length. Each individual string is precisely wound to within 1/32″ difference in length and subjected to 450 pounds of tension for 3 times longer than necessary to eliminate creep. No other manufacturer matches this process today. The result is no serving separation, no peep rotation and absolute stability with proper dealer setup.

Available Finishes

The S.W.A.T is available in Realtree Hardwoods Green HD®. The optional Octane accessory package includes an Octane BantamWeight quiver, 7″ stabilizer, Hostage Pro capture rest, 5-pin fiber optic sight, braided wrist sling and metal peep sight.

InVelvet™

You must feel the difference to believe it. The bow is actually soft to the touch, insulates hands from cold winter weather, dampens noise and protects from dings and scratches. Unaffected by common chemicals such as insect repellents or scent sprays, it is the most durable over-coating on the market.

Have you shot the Mission Menace bow? Let your fellow archer’s know what you think of the Menace by leaving a comment below.

Outdoorsman Review:

(1/15/11) The review for the Mission Menace was sent to us by Patrick R. from Hutchinson, Kansas. Good to hear from another Mathews shooter. I’m shooting the Maniac.

I purchased a Mission Menace for my 10y.o. son after his Martin Tiger warped, making it impossible to shoot accurately. My wife and I don’t have a ton of money to keep upgrading bows as the boys grow bigger (all 7 of them), so having a bow with a wide range of adjustment is very important to us.

Having been out of the archery world since I was a teenager, everything was new to me as I tried to figure out what to get my son. I happened upon the Mission Menace at our local shop and was intrigued by the incredibly large range of adjustability, both in draw length and in draw weight. My son is right handed, but left-eye dominant, so he has the disadvantage of trying to draw a bow with his weak arm. The Menace looked like it would fit the bill for him for a few years until he grows old enough to bowhunt.

Adjusting the Menace is incredibly easy, as it only takes the removal of one allen screw on each cam to adjust the draw length module. This has come in very handy, as my son’s draw length has changed slightly as his form has improved. I am a tried and true lefty, and since I
don’t have a bow yet, I am also able to shoot my son’s Menace by adjusting the modules to my draw length and increasing the draw weight. Yes, it really is that adjustable.

Even though the Menace is adjustable enough for an adult to shoot it, it really is designed to be a youth bow. It is very light, and with a simple sight and Hostage rest on it, my son is able to shoot for extended periods of time as long as his draw arm doesn’t get tired.

What I like about it:
The weight is very acceptable, and it is a good value considering how adjustable it is. The finish is top notch, and it doesn’t try to rip my son’s arm out of its socket if he lets down.

What I’m not a fan of:
While it is very adjustable, it is limited in some respect. Even though the bow is rated at 16-52#, only someone with a 30″ draw length will ever hit the 52# max. At my draw length of 27″ the max the bow can be adjusted to is 49#. As my son gets stronger, he won’t be able
to increase his maximum past 45# until his draw length gets much, much longer. This is the one thing, I think, that limits the Menace to a youth bow and not really a hunting bow. While 45# might be enough to take a deer, I would prefer my son to have a stronger bow before he ventures into the woods to kill a deer.

I don’t see the Menace sticking around long since Mathews introduced their Mission Craze for 2011, which has the same adjustable draw length, but with a wider range of draw weight adjustment, going from 15-70#, all with the same limbs and cams. If you are looking for a bow to grow with your child who may not be interested in hunting, the Menace will fit the bill nicely. If you’re on a budget and need to get one bow that s/he could use from childhood into adulthood, then it may not be the one.

Manufacturer’s Specs for the Menace:

  • IBO Rating: Universal CAM (N/A)
  • Axle to Axle: 31 inches
  • Brace height: 7.25 inches
  • Let off: up to 70%
  • Extruded riser
  • Finish: Max 4 HD or Black / Real Tree / Advantage Max 4 HD

2010 PSE Omen Compound Bow

PSE Omen Compound Bow

The PSE Omen was reviewed by a master Outdoorsman

If you’ve shot the PSE Omen then let us know what you think of it by leaving a comment below.

Outdoorsman Review:

(1/15/11) The review for the PSE Omen was provided by Arren D. from somewhere here in the US. Thanks Arren for your very detailed review of the Omen. Wish I had one of these myself.

The 2010 PSE Omen was announced and people went crazy over the 366 feet per second IBO speed. This review is to see if it really matches up with that standard.

Bow as shot:

2010 PSE Omen
29″ draw
60# draw weight
16 grams on string with peep and d-loop
VaporTrail Limbdriver rest
Limbsavers stab
360gr Victory VForce Pink arrow

Draw:

Many people would state that you should stay away from short brace heights as they are very harsh draws. While you are pulling the weight farther, I found the draw to be quite nice. The break over is not too bad as it is only 65% let off, had it been more the bow would probably want to jump out of your hand. PSE chose the correct let-off for the draw cycle. The hump is noticeable, however it only took me three shots to get used to it.

Shooting:

Individuals that do not know their draw length will probably hate this bow as they will pull too far and smack their arms with the low brace height. The back wall is small…very small. Any movement will make the bow want to pull you out of shooting position. I found that this has actually steadied my mounting position but shooters just getting into the sport will have sore shoulders their first time shooting this bow. There is no jump felt at all when the arrow is released.

Speed:

This bow shot an average of 330 feet per second with my setup. This is well within IBO and has an amazing 87.1KE at 60# at 70# that would equal just under 100KE with a light(er) arrow.

Noise:

This bow did make some noise shooting the lighter arrow. The string made quite an audible pop when it hit the string dampener. It is about twice as loud as a Bowtech Tribute and Hoyt Carbonmatrix. I swapped out the dampener pad with a Limbsavers pad and added a set of Limbsavers Split Limb Ultraquads and the sound disappeared. The vibration from the limbs due to the pre-load and the hard dampener pad included seems to have been the cause of the sound. With the Limbsavers installed I would put it on par or below both the bows stated above when it comes to sound. Total added cost was about $30.

Accuracy:

Accuracy is all on the shooter. I find this bow to be extremely accurate, even up to 70#. The only problem most shooters will have is the let-off is less than most other companies, so you will be holding more weight. Shooting out past 50 yards becomes easier with this speed bow, as the pins are closer and accidentally choosing the 40 yard pin doesn’t drop you too far. This bow is more accurate than this shooter, I will tell you that.

Overall build quality:

The bow is a little heavier than other, but we are talking ounces. The pre-loaded limbs seem extremely sturdy and the slim handle makes for extremely comfortable shooting. The Mossy Oak Treestand Finish makes the bow look extremely sharp. All in all it LOOKS fast.

Overall thoughts:

This bow is not for everyone. Beginners to the sport should find a bow that is a tad more forgiving on the draw. The low brace height will scare away individuals but it shouldn’t. If you are shooting the correct draw length it will only take a few shots to learn the draw cycle. The audible pop it made sounded almost like a .22 going off when I first heard it. Luckily, I had purchased the Limbsavers equipment before the bow, so it was readily available.

I would wholeheartedly recommend this bow to any serious hunter or 3D shooter who requires speed to ensure that tough shot gets made.

“Good shots lead to quick kills…the game deserves that type of shot”

Outdoorsman Review:

(1/14/11) The review for the Bear Apprentice was left for us by Michael H. from Missoula, Montana. Thanks Michael for the review. After seeing the specs on this bow, I’m thinking it might be a good fit for my son. He’s outgrown the Genesis. Of course I’ll get him the Realtree APG.

I bought the bear apprentice for my wife for Christmas. She absolutely loves this bow. This was a surprise gift so she did not shoot this bow before I bought it, but with the adjust-ability in the draw length and weight without a bow press I had it fitting her in minutes. I did shoot this bow at the shop at twenty-seven inch draw and fifty-five pounds and loved it. This bow is quiet and a smooth draw and very light weight. There is very little hand shock and pretty forgiving which is very important for new archers.

We have hers set up at twenty-five inch draw at thirty-five pounds so she can build her muscles because this is her first bow. The bow tunes very easy and is extremely accurate. I would recommend this bow to anybody getting into this great sport. There are a few small cons to this bow that I noticed; first the dip job on the pink camo is not done the best so you can see minor flaws throughout. Also they tried saving money with the partial whisker biscuit they put on and it looks cheap.

Over all I would say this bow is a nine out of ten for a beginner shooter.

Manufacturer’s Specs for the Apprentice:

  • IBO Speed: Up to 265 feet per second
  • Weight: 2.9 pounds
  • Brace Height: 6 inches
  • Axle to Axle: 27.5 inches
  • Peak draw weight: 20/50 pounds
  • Draw length range: 15 to 27 inches
  • Let off: 70%
  • Contra-Band™ strings and cables
  • Teflon cable slide
  • No bow press required to adjust draw length
  • Available in Pink Camo or Realtree™ APG

We need someone who’s shot the Diamond Black Ice FLX to tell us how this bow performs. Are you that person? Leave a master Outdoorsman review for the Diamond Black Ice FLX.

Manufacturer’s Specs for the Black Ice FLX:

The 2010 Black Ice FLX  improves its namesake by the addition of the FLX-Guard™, a cable containment system which addresses the tuning effects of high cable tension on today’s premium bows. Draw your bow and the FLX-Guard™ flexes inward to absorb cable guard torque that normally transfers to the riser. Black Ice FLX advanced engineering and design delivers slick speed with absolute minimal hand shock and noise.

  • Brace height: 7-1/4 inches
  • Axle to axle: 31-3/4 inches
  • Draw length: 25 – 30 inches
  • Draw weights: 50, 60, & 70 pounds
  • IBO speed: 310 – 318 feet per second
  • Kinetic energy: 78.6 foot-pounds
  • Let-off: 65% to 80%

FLX Guard™

The new FLX-Guard™ cable containment system addresses the tuning effects of extreme cable tension and inflexible cable guards found on today’s bows. As the bow is drawn, the FLX-Guard™ responds by flexing inward, absorbing much of the cable guard torque that would have otherwise been transferred to the riser. The result is substantial reduction in lateral nock travel, yielding a real advancement in tune-ability, forgiveness and accuracy.

Rotating Module

Unlike most bows on the market today, Diamond bows do not require a new cam or module to set your draw length. Simply remove the mod screws, rotate the module, and re-tighten. At least six inches of draw length adjustment is available on most models, allowing for custom draw length tuning for yourself or others.

Outdoorsman Review:

Rob with Tom taken with the Bear Charge Bow

Rob with Tom taken with the Bear Charge Bow

I’m one of those guys who generally knows what he wants and has everything he needs, so I’m hard to shop for. Friends challenged me to
take animals with a bow since it appeared to be too easy for me with a firearm.

After taking my limit in deer last year I decided to challenge myself with bowhunting and purchased a Bear Charge. Within a month I was hitting a consistent three inch square even in crosswinds all the way out to thirty yards. I am consistently hitting a dinner plate at 60 and 70 yards now.

I am set to 29 inches @ 65#, shooting
the Gold Tip 5575 with 100 grain field tips for practice and 100 grain G5 Montec for hunting. I took two rabbits and a 10&1/2 inch beard Tom
this turkey season. The Tom was at 28 yards when I hit him. I took the Tom with the Wisker Biscuit installed. I’m happy to break the bow in that way. I have modified a few things on the bow now that I’ve had it in the field for many weeks. I have a five pin sight, drop away arrow rest and string stopper. Otherwise this is a stock Bear Charge RTH package.

Manufacturer’s Specs for the Charge:

  • IBO Speed: up to 305 feet per second
  • Weight: 3.7 pounds
  • Brace height: 7.75 inches
  • Axle to axle: 30 inches
  • Peak draw weights: 50, 60, & 70 pounds
  • Draw length: 26 to 30 inches
  • Let off: 80%
  • Strings/Cables: Contra-Band™
  • Cable slide: Teflon

Zero Tolerance Limb Pockets

A zero-tolerance limb-to-cup-to-riser fit greatly reduces vibration, regardless of draw weight adjustment.

Perimeter Weighted Inner Cam System

The inner cam system allows the Charge to be adjusted to all of its draw length positions without the use of modules and does not require a bow press for draw length adjustments at 1 inch increments.

Flared Quad Limbs

Bear® perfected these beyond parallel compression-molded limbs to distribute stress evenly during draw and release.

Rose’s experience with the Micro Burner™:

My husband and I were looking for a bow for me that was very adjustable and that I could pull back but would still kill deer. He found me the PSE Micro Burner bow at Bass Pro Shops and I loved it from the first minute I shot it.

I finally got to where I could shoot the bow good with it set on 29 #’s. I even killed a groundhog from our hunting blind with it. I hope to get my first deer with a bow with it next year. I do wish it went to 40#’s though in case I ever get to that level, but I love it! Me and my husband’s digital camara tore up a few months ago or I would have sent pictures.

Nice bow.
